| The Welcoming flags are proudly blowing in the wind at HYC |
Fun continues as the HYC FruitBowl Regatta begins today led by our team of 18 club and elite coaches |
| Since its inception FruitBowl has evolved into a Canadian youth sailing phenomenon. Clubs in British Columbia, Ontario, and Nova Scotia have used FruitBowl as a template. Over the years the event has showcased some of Canada’s best sailing and coaching talent, providing inspiring role models and exceptional instruction to hundreds and hundreds of young sailors. The reputation of HYC as a wonderful and welcoming venue has spread even further. None of it could have happened without the perseverance and dedication of HYC’s volunteer community. |
| Hudson Yacht Club has a proud history of youth sailing excellence dating back to the 1950s with junior members winning national and international regattas. In the 1970s, less than ten years after its inception, its Junior programme methods of operation were copied by nine SLV clubs and several U.S. groups. HYC graduates have regularly been in demand as instructors at other clubs for over three decades. As HYC turns 100 years old it’s perhaps not an accident then that it is also the birthplace and permanent home to Canada’s most attended and celebrated youth regatta. |
The "FruitBowl" regatta began at Hudson Yacht Club in July of 1996. A year out of university, Craig Roberts was the sailing coach that summer. Craig had grown up sailing in Hudson and remembered the excitement at HYC during the occasional interclub regattas in the 1980s. "Why not try and bring sailing teams together, back to Hudson, for training?" It seemed like a good idea at the time. Neil Burnham, then RStLYC’s coach, helped rally the local area clubs. Six sailing teams with their coaches attended. The name "Fruitbowl" was chosen early, a reference to the tropical straw hats adorned with plastic fruits worn by the sailing coaches and music from Jimmy Buffett’s "Fruitcakes" album which filled the air on the first morning as the sailors rigged their boats. The weather was sunny and breezy, pineapples were given out as prizes, and the FruitBowl was born! The original concept was simple and has remained unchanged: Work with other clubs and organizations to attract youth sailors, teams, coaches, and parents to Hudson Yacht Club for a multi-day event. Combine training with actual competition, emphasizing skills development. Do this by carefully selecting the best available coaches and focus them on preparing the sailors for higher competition like the CYA Youth Champs and CORK. Combine all of it into a cooperative and collaborative environment that is fast paced, highly organized, and mostly fun. Hope for good weather and wind! These are the ingredients for FruitBowl and the recipe for success has evolved over a decade now.
