MIY Eco-Friendly Design Decor: Re-cycled & Re-vamped
Window Memo Board

Hands-on time: Under 20 minutes
Total time: Plus overnight drying to cure.
Skill: Super easy
Project cost: Under $20.00 for the supplies

Materials & tools:

•  Slate or rough granite pre-cut tiles (available at hardware stores in assorted
sizes and finishes by the unit)
•  Small decorative tile mosaic pieces (available in packages or on sheets)
•  Decorative tile borders to use as handles
•  A soft cloth and a damp cloth
•  Ruler
•  Loctite Power Grab, latex based construction adhesive
•  Felt fabric and scissors

(Materials for this project are available at hardware stores.)

During these cold winter days you simply just want to curl up by the fireplace,
get cozy and relax. I give you this super easy project to do just that. Plain
charcoal coloured slate or rough granite tiles trimmed with multi coloured
mosaic tile pieces to make impressive cheese trays. This is truly an effortless
and creative way to present a variety of cheeses to guests or with your
special someone. When not in use the pieces can also become trays to
display an assortment of candles or for serving bite-size appetizers or
desserts. You can make these creations using leftover tiles and slate pieces
from previous home reno projects, reutilizes to reinvent.

After you have chosen the size and style of tile you want to use, clean the tiles
with a damps cloth and dry. Take the sheet of small decorative tiles and
separate the pieces if needed.

Turn the large tiles (rectangle or square shapes) over to place decorative feet
at the bottom of each tray to give them a little height.  Place four small
decorative tiles, one on each corner for the feet. Apply a dab of Loctite acrylic
base construction adhesive to each tile piece, press into place, and remove
any excess adhesive with a damp cloth.

Turn the large tile pieces over onto their feet. Place the small decorative tiles
along the border of two of the sides of the tray in a pattern of your choice.
This is like putting a puzzle together; you will need to adjust the sizes of the
pieces as you place them. Once you are satisfied with their placement which
now fits snug along the borders it is time to affix them into place. Use a dab of
the construction adhesive at the back of each tile piece, doing one piece at a
time. Press each piece into place, and once a row is completed remove any
excess adhesive along the sides using a damp cloth.

Repeat the same steps to apply the a decorative tile border on the other side
of they tray, and to apply longer decorative tile border pieces to use as
handles. Or you can opt not to place a border along two of the sides,
especially on smaller trays, like I did.

Once all the pieces are into place, give the tray a final wipe with a damp cloth
and allow the trays to dry and cure overnight before regular use.
Felt backing protects tables and other surfaces. The bottom of the mosaic
feet can be lined with felt if desired. Cut felt pieces to size needed and apply
with a dab of Loctite Power Grab.
Wipe the trays with damp cloth and a little soap dish, rise and pat dry before
using. All you need to do now is to sit relax, read a good book and enjoy.

Variations:
•  Make each tray unique by using interesting mosaic pieces and colour
variations. Since they are so easy to make, why not make a few extra ones,
they make handy hostess gifts to have around.

For creative entertaining use chalk to write directly on slate to identify each
cheese variety clearly, then simply wipes clean with a damp cloth.

Do not use the cheese tile trays as a cutting board.

Loctite Power Grab construction adhesive is perfect to use on a variety of
small projects and repairs on various materials such as brick, concrete, wood,
cork, foam, drywall, and ceramic. Since this is a water-based adhesive
product, it has easy water clean up.
