Beads, beads and more beads are everywhere on everything this season,
from home decorative accessories to fabulous fashion finds! Combine them
all together to make yourself a very unique blanket poncho-wrap which is sure
to express your sense of style while keeping your warm. I transformed a basic
throw blanket into a stylish fashion poncho-wrap and personalized it with
beaded creative details. These fashionable wraps are embellished with what
looks like elaborate embroidery, beads and hand stitched work, but here’s my
secret; it’s all no sew! No kidding! So go ahead and wrap yourself in timeless
elegance at the faction of the price of store purchased fashion throws.
Using only a few basic supplies, you don’t have to spend a fortune to create
the latest fashion trends. A few embellishments and a few decorative strokes
applied with multi purposed Touch Relief paints, and you’re done. This is
fabulous holiday gift idea to make for a friends, family and teens; simply buy
the blanket and supplies and make it a gift kit.
Prepare a large work area such as a dinning room table. Fold the blanket in
two lengthwise, joining the two narrow ends together. Place the folded blanket
flat onto the working area. To make the front opening of the wrap, measure to
find the middle point, and then cut a straight line up one half of the folded
blanket to the center point (fold). At the center point, slightly round the cut to
help stop fraying and make the throw sit better on the neck. If using a woven
throw, use a basic blanket stitch or machine stitch the cut edge opening to
prevent fraying.
Cover your work area with a plastic sheet or a piece of cardboard. Open the
blanket up and lay it flat onto your work area. Place the leather flower trims
randomly around the blanket. Add assorted beads, mother of pearl buttons,
and rhinestones onto and around the leather flower notions. Once you are
pleased with your composition use the Touch Relief paints to affix them into
place. The Touch paints also act as an adhesive, apply a dab onto each
decorative garnish, patting it down to secure it in place. I used crystal cloud to
apply all the leather flowers and embellishments because it dries to a clear
finish.
The Touch paints nozzle tip applicators make this easy to apply free-hand
creative touches around your composition. Press the tube lightly and glide
evenly to create the design of your choice. You can create loops, swirls and
dots over the existing pattern. New nozzle cap attachments are available to
create other effects such as 3 lines, ribbon and thin-style types of lines. To
add the look of embroidery details onto the poncho-wrap, I added a few
Touch Relief paint outlines here and there, using Gloss orange to add 3 line
swirls and curves designs around the beaded details. I used glitter brown to
apply some of the beads and to add dot details. Let the Touch paint and
notions dry to fully bond to the fabric for 12 to 24 hours.
Heat-set the fabric paints by ironing the reverse side of the item for 3 minutes
using cotton or high setting, but check a small area on your throw to make
sure that you are not to hot for the fabric you are using. Once heat-set, the
Touch paints are machine washable but you should wait at least 48 hours
before washing. The paint colours will not fade, crack or peel-off, and will
remain flexible once dry.
This fashionable poncho-wrap will definitely keep you warm and fashionable
this winter. It can be worn over coats, or your everyday fashions, with or
without a belt, or just to curl up and read a book, now that you have save all
this time on sewing your creation. And the best part was that there’s
absolutely no sewing involved, but you can also choose to sew everything on
if you want, it will simply take longer. So go ahead and wrap yourself around
something gorgeous before the holidays.
Tips: I used leather flower trims that were purchased by the meter; I then cut
them to separate into individual flowers. To make focal embellishments, try
your throw on before decorating and lightly mark focal areas with chalk such
as chest, and center back etc… the chalk can easily be brushed off after.
Variations; Clothing accessories such as belts, purses, hats, gloves can also
be jazzed up in a jiffy with similar personalized embellishments. Great for kids
and teens fashions they are sure to enjoy crafting their own fashions such as
t-shirts, jeans, and jackets in the same manner. Notions of all types can be
used such as studs, fringes, tassels, patch work, appliqués, ribbons, buttons,
pretty much anything that you like or that inspires you!
Beaded details can also create stunning home décor accessories such as, to
make a decorative throw blanket, pillows, table runners, placemats, curtains,
picture frames, and decorative boxes to even on gift-wrappings. Add a splash
of colour to your holiday accessories and decorations around your home in a
dash.
