Project Creations by Spencer Aitchison
MIY Teen Decor; Graffiti Table:
Spencer Aitchision has utilized his passion for graffiti art in a very creative
way. Spencer transformed an old kitchen table into a "chill out time" coffee
table with various graffiti tag names of all the Aitchison clan, like a family-tree
tribute using Sharpie markers.
Hands-on time: Approximately three to four hours, depending on detail
Total time: Plus 15 minutes of drying time for markers and two hours for each
varnish coat
Skill: Easy to moderate depending on artwork
Cost: Less than $25
Materials & Tools that you will need for the various projects:
* Old wooden table
* Pencil
* Measuring tape
* Handsaw
* Sandpaper
* TSP cleaner
* Lint-free cloth
* Design of your choice
* Graphite paper
* Painter's tape
* Sanford Sharpie paint markers in assorted colours, bold, extra bold and
medium points
* Smaller paint markers for details and outlines in assorted fine-tipped sizes
* Minwax polycrylic clear gloss protective finish (matte or gloss)
(Materials for this project are available at arts, craft stores and hardware
stores.)
Sharpie paint markers are oil-based, opaque, valve-action markers that can
be applied to matte or glossy surfaces. They work on light or dark surfaces
and can be applied to metal, pottery, wood, rubber, glass, plastic, stone, etc.
They are fade, water and abrasion resistant.
If you are using a table of standard height, cut the legs to a coffee-table
height using a handsaw, and sand the cuts smooth. Wash the surface and
legs with TSP and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.
You can draw graffiti freehand as Spencer did or draw the text with a pencil
and fill it in with markers. Or prepare a design on paper and cut it out to use
as your template. Then cut a piece of graphite paper in the same size and
place under the cutout design. Attach both to the table with painter's tape and
trace the design onto the table. Remove paper and tape, and colour in your
design using four or five different colours of bold to extra-bold tipped Sharpie
paint markers.
You can omit the pencil outlines and apply the paint marker graffiti, which is
what most teenagers will do. Colour in the words or letters, overlapping some
of the words and adding a colour border around the letters. Shade in the
edges of the letters or contour them using medium- to fine-tipped markers, or
metallic markers. You can also use wide markers for outlines but experiment
or practice on paper first. To protect the art and give the table a durable
finish, apply two coats of matte or gloss water-based varnish using a
paintbrush or small roller. Several coats can be applied, letting each coat dry
between applications.

surface finish, apply two coats of matt or gloss water-based varnish finish
using a paintbrush or a small roller. Several coats can be applied, letting each
coat dry between applications.
Miy Variations:
•Other items that can be jazzed up with graffiti styling, are chairs,
bookshelves, book covers, work desks, desk top accessories, back-packs,
pencil to CD case carriers, MP3 player, cell phones, magazine racks, picture
frames etc. I’m sure you’ll come up with their own items to personalize with
your own style.
Miy Tips:
•Sharpies are also great for various indoor and outdoor décor craft projects.
They are Xylene free. Sharpie paint markers are permanent oil-based,
opaque valve-action paint markers. They work well on light or dark surfaces
and can be applied to metal, pottery, wood, rubber, glass, plastic, stone, etc.
They are fade, water and abrasion resistant for a long lasting durable mark.
Which means you can use them on virtually any surface.
*Attention Teenagers…please do not do this unless you have the full
permission and support of your parents. Graffiti should only be done on
allocated walls or on other mediums beyond public property or it is considered
an criminal offence and you can be prosecuted and fined.
