Gingerbread House Recipe
250g unsalted butter
200g dark muscovado sugar
7 tbsp golden syrup
600g plain flour
2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
4 tsp ground ginger
• Heat oven to 200C. In a pan melt the butter, sugar and syrup. Mix the flour, bicarbonate of soda and ground
ginger into a large bowl, then stir in the butter mixture to make a stiff dough. Add a tiny splash of water if
needed to make it come together.
• Cut out the house shape templates to the thickness of 1/4.. Place the shapes onto baking paper, onto a
baking sheet.
• Bake for 12 mins or until firm and just a slightly darker at the edges. Leave to cool for a few mins, they will
firm up. You can then trim around the templates to give them clean, sharp edges. Leave to cool completely.
Easy Royal Icing recipe to make Gingerbread Houses.
Royal icing is used for decorating the gingerbread house, it also acts like a mortar to hold the gingerbread
pieces together to make the house. This recipe makes enough icing for make and decorate one gingerbread
house. To make the icing for a kids gingerbread making party, simply make a large batch, calucalating the
amounts to make sure you have enough for each child.
• 2 large egg whites
• 2 2/3 cup powdered sugar
1 Whisk together the egg whites and half the amount of the powdered sugar until smooth.
2 Add the remaining powdered sugar to the mixture. Use an electric mixer on high speed, bet until the icing
holds stiff peaks. Simply add more powdered form stiff peaks.
To prevent the icing from drying out, place a clean dampened towel over the icing. For the kids party activity,
put amounts of icing in small individual containers.
