Home Decor Craft Project: Tray Chic.... It’s chic and simple
“Travel trays to treasure”
Planning a winter getaway! If you happen to go away for a little winter getaway, it’s
the perfect project to make to preserve your travel souvenirs. Treasure your travel
memento’s from your photographs to your luggage bag tags, scrapbooking style
but in a picture frame that is transformed into a tray. I added an abstract style, silver
leafing finish in order to give this modern style frame an old world touch while
keeping sleek looking. How chic is that? Perfect for a pause café and to adorn an
ottoman. Travel theme trays make wonderful decorative accents because they can
easily be altered to suit the changing of the seasons with a new montage.
Hands-on time: a weekend project
Total time: Plus drying time for the paint and varnish.
Skill: Moderate.
Project cost: Under $20.00
Materials & tools:
Plain frame with two sandwiched glass pains (size:21 in x 11 in)
(I used a white double pane glass picture frame by Nexxt)
Newspapers
Light grain sandpaper, steel wool and tack cloth
Acrylic paint (if needed)
Silver leaf and adhesive medium
Small paintbrush, and a clean paintbrush
High gloss varnish by Minwax, Polycrylics (waterbased)
Travel memento’s such as; Photographs, postcards, maps, airplane tickets, coins,
stamps, maps, wine labels, baggage tags etc.
Assorted decorative or scrapbooking paper, new or remnants in various colours
and styles
Terrifically Tacky Tape, 6mm width
Ruler or measuring tape
2 silver decorative handles with short screws, a screwdriver
Clear silicone glue
(Materials for this project are available at art, crafts and hardware stores.)
Remove the double glass panes from the frame and side aside. Lightly sand and
wipe the frame with a tack cloth to prepare the surface. I used a frame that was
already white; paint the frame if needed and let dry.
To apply the silver leaf finish to frame; use a soft bristle paintbrush to apply a coat
of adhesive size (a water-based, pressure-sensitive adhesive size) to cover the
surface and sides of the frame. It will appear milky when applied, but dries clear.
Allow the adhesive to become dry and tacky to the touch (15 to 60 minutes).
Gently hand-tear silver leaf pieces to form odd geometric shapes as you apply them
randomly over the adhesive size. Place and press the silver pieces around the
frame overlapping some of the pieces, and leaving some of the white areas
exposed. Rub over the applied pieces with a soft clean brush to remove any excess
leafing. Repeat steps to apply the remaining silver leaf pieces.
To give the finish a polished stainless steel look, with gentle strokes use steel wool
to buff all around the frame, going in one direction. This will reduce some of the
shine and expose some of the white paint from the frame. Once completed, wipe the
frame with a soft cloth.
For a lustrous modern finishing touch to protect the silver leafing coating, apply two
coats of high gloss Polycrylic waterbased varnish by Minwax (since its water based
it can be used indoors and is order free). Apply one coat at a time, letting it dry
between each application.
Measure to center and mark each location for the decorative handles and attach
them into place on each side of the frame using short screws and screwdriver.
Lightly spread some clear silicone adhesive along the edge of the inside of the
frame to secure the top glass pane into place and let it set for 12 hours. This will
protect your travel souvenirs from damaging spills.
Gather your travel mementos such as postcards, stamps, vine labels, pamphlet’s,
coins, hotel and restaurant cards and photographs from a recent vacation. The
travel montage will be placed on the bottom glass pane. Make sure that both glass
panes are clean and finger print free. Cut paper pieces in assorted colours and
shapes. To add interest and colour to the tray presentation, I placed six stripped
paper strips evenly space to line the bottom glass pane (place horizontal or
vertical). Secure the paper strips into place with small amounts of clear double-face
tape. Place you travel keepsakes over the glass pane in a composition of your
liking, overlapping some of the items if needed. Use double-face tape to secure
certain items into place.
Position the top glass and frame part over the travel montage composition, gently
place the glass over everything, making sure that everything is nicely sandwiched
into place. Readjust the items if needed. Holding both ends, flip the frame over, and
secure the clips back into place.
Have fun with this project transforming your vacation pictures into a unique travel
tray worth treasuring.
Variations: Add press flowers for a spring or summer travel theme, or just about
anything you want to preserve.
Don’t hesitate to paint the frame in different colours or to use combined colors of
leafing to function with your décor.
Use decorative punches to create silhouette shapes, and specialty scrapbooking
notions to further enhance and embellish your travel tray theme.
it’s the perfect project to make to
preserve your travel souvenirs.
