Singer/songwriter Sarah MacDougall at Riversmead: Writing a song is about feeling an emotion.

While the big crowds turned out for the downtown stage, the highlights of this year's Hudson Music Festival July 29-Aug. 1
were the venue shows such as Sunday's intimate outdoor workshop with Sarah MacDougall and Jeff Smallwood.
Having seen Sarah perform during the festival at the Wyman Church evening concert and again on the Cameron stage
during the Hudson Street Fair, it was a privilege to see her in such a personal setting, nestled under a big tree at
Riversmead.
The workshop was about songwriting and the creative processes. Sarah and Jeff talked about the stories behind their
songs, the challenges of writing music, the creative progression and life on the road.
Sarah is a phenomenal artist and women with a unique style and sound of her own. Her songs are powerful and poignant,
with a sense of healing freedom, and each of her songs all spoke to my deeper place. A quote from her I've got Sorrow
summarizes everything the Sunday workshop was about: "I've got sorrow in my heart...and I just wanted you to know."
Fitting, seeing as how this year's festival was dedicated to the memory of Ken Hodgson.

I purchased Sarah's CD titled Across the Atlantic and she signed it "Thanks for listening", summing up her

Sarah and Jeff spoke about how songwriting is far more than words on paper. Jeff says a singer/songwriter wants listeners
to feel their pain, the salt in their wound, the blood in their veins, as well as the joys of a song. Everyone, he adds, has a
story in their hearts that they want others to hear, because once it is heard, the healing process can begin.
Sarah said that writing a song is all about feeling an emotion, the creative process of feeling the pain or joy that's going
on in one life in order to release it.
A young girl asked Sarah why all her songs are so sad. She replied they are not all sad, adding that she's now feeling
inspired to write a few happy songs because of her great time in Hudson.
